Berks County Tennis Fund
Established in 2002 the Berks County Tennis Fund was created to improve the quality of life for children in Berks County by allowing them the opportunity to learn tennis, along with patience, good self-discipline, self-esteem, and critical thinking skills. The fund was established by a group of civic-minded community leaders, including the late Merv Heller, who raised money to endow the fund for the benefit of current and future generations. Merv Heller, an attorney, also served as the president of the U.S. Tennis Association from 2001-2003.
Don Hutchison, a local real estate agent who played tennis with Heller told the Reading Eagle, “You know, when you play tennis against different people, you know if they’re cheating. And if they cheat you in tennis, they’ll also cheat you in life. Well, with Merv, you got a good call every time.” Heller, who passed away in 2012, is remembered not only for his skill and love of tennis, but his compassion, his humor, and his leadership, on and off the court.
