The Ira M. Becker Fund for Poor Young Men (Berks County Angel Fund)

In the Codicil of the will of Emma R. Becker from 1914, she stipulated that the proceeds from renting her house should be used “to educate poor young men, one at a time, or give them a trade as money permits, but not to be given to any institutions,” under the care of the Reading Trust Fund. Any man under 30 with financial need was applicable for the grant. She wanted the fund to be named in memory of her son, Ira M. Becker. Eventually, through various mergers, the Reading Trust Fund became Wachovia Bank, which transferred the fund to Berks County Community Foundation in 2005.
